However, it is fairly common among those who suffer from migraine headaches. Some migraine sufferers report that their headaches are triggered by strong scents. Understandably, this connection could lead to a fear of smells. Regardless of whether or not headaches are present, however, osmophobia can feel overwhelming. However, osmophobia is more than just a fear. It is a true phobia whereby fear becomes extreme, and in some cases, irrational. Phobias can have debilitating effects on sufferers that interfere with their ability to complete daily activities. Osmophobia and Migraines A 2015 Brazilian study found that of 235 patients with headaches, 147 patients were diagnosed with migraines and 53 percent of the migraine sufferers had osmophobia. The study also found that among the headache patients, those with migraines and a significant number of years of headache history presented more signs of osmophobia. In some cases, a certain smell can trigger a migraine in the population prone to these severe headaches. Triggers The sense of smell is highly personalized, and what smells wonderful to one person might smell terrible to the next. In addition, odors are heavily linked to memories of past experiences. Smelling Grandmas favorite perfume or the flowers that were in bloom the day you proposed to your wife can trigger a sudden flood of positive memories. Likewise, those suffering from osmophobia may be triggered by a wide range of possible scents. Symptoms Extreme anxietyDry mouthRapid breathingIrregular heartbeatNauseaExcessive sweatingInability to articulate words or sentencesShaking or tremblingShortness of breath Osmophobia and Other Disorders Besides migraines, osmophobia is sometimes related to other disorders. For example, those with chemophobia, or the fear of chemicals, may have a strong aversion to any chemical odor. People with a fear of animals might react strongly to any animal scents. Those who are afraid of water may be sensitive to the smell of the ocean. Management Like any phobia, osmophobia that is unrelated to a medical condition generally responds well to a variety of therapeutic techniques. Systematic desensitization, in which you are gradually exposed to the feared scent, is particularly helpful. If your osmophobia is related to migraines, however, let your therapist know. Your doctor will need to be involved in your treatment to ensure that you do not worsen your headaches. Thomas Jefferson Americas Champion of Education - 865 Words
One of Americas champions of education and a clear proponent of the principles of democracy, Thomas Jefferson, thought that until America had universal education it could never endure universal suffrage. Ignorant individuals have no basis in understanding democracy, and are not capable of self-government. However, with the application of education, he believed that the masses could rise to the occasion of good citizenry (Van De Mille). In the United States, free public education is mandated from kindergarten to 12th grade, and education is offered from pre-school to graduate school. Yet the system is in crisis in many ways, among which, recruitment and retention of qualified teachers to lead the necessary changes that will allow students to actualize and become intelligent global citizens. Teachers today face a number of challenges that contribute to a lack of job satisfaction, leaving schools for other professions that are more lucrative, low comparative compensation, and poor working conditions: Low comparative compensation In 1960, Senator John Kennedy remarked that we are a nation that pays its sanitation workers more than its teachers. Essay Heroes as Monsters in Vanity Fair - 1330 Words
ââ¬Å"Yes, this is Vanity Fair, not a moral place certainly, nor a merry one, though very noisy.â⬠(Thackeray xviii) It is here, in Vanity Fair that its most insidious resident, selfishness,-veiled with alluring guises-has shrewdly thrived among its citizens, invading, without exception, even the most heroic characters and living so unheeded that it has managed to breed monsters of them. There are those in Vanity Fair, however, who have heeded the vicious selfishness, and, though not having lived unaffected by it, were still able to point out its many evils. One such man is William Makepeace Thackeray who exposed this truth in his novel Vanity Fair: A Novel Without a Hero which was published in 1848. Thackeray draws upon the work of a fellowâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Thackeray got the idea for his title from chapter twelve of John Bunyanââ¬â¢s book titled Pilgrimââ¬â¢s Progress, published in 1678. In his book, Bunyan describes the journey of a boy, Christian, from the City of Destruction, which symbolizes the secular world, to the Celestial City, which symbolizes Heaven. One of the obstacles that Christian must endure on his way to the Celestial City is his passage through the city of Vanity, where a fair, by the name of Vanity Fair is held. At Vanity Fair ââ¬Å"everything sold or that comes there is meaningless.â⬠All sorts of merchandise are sold, such as houses, lands, businesses, places, honors, promotions, titles, countries, kingdoms, desires, pleasures, and delights of all sorts such as prostitutes, brothels, wives., husbands, children, masters, servants, lives, blood, bodies, souls, silver, gold, pearls, precious stones, and so forth (Fuhrmann).â⬠I think Thackeray truly understood Bunyanââ¬â¢s purpose with the Vanity Fair in Pilgrimââ¬â¢s Progress and was able to take it to a higher level by using specific examples of his time to illustrate the truth of vanityââ¬â¢s presence in peopleââ¬â¢s everyday lives. While Bunyanââ¬â¢s ultimate goal may have been to show how vanity keeps us from focusing on God, Thackeray, although I donââ¬â¢t think his intention was quite that, did see what Bunyan was able to see in society: autotheism. Sojourner Truth Essays - American Slaves, Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth In an ever changing world , the evolution of man has been the most drastic in terms of technological, environmental, and emotional advancement. With great expansions in the various areas mentioned earlier the human being has ignored the very entity of there existence, and the power of reasoning, the ability to comprehend right from wrong without distortion. The Narrative of Sojourner Truth illustrates the hardships that were endured: enslavement, illiteracy, underclassing, brutal assaults, and murders. The African -American women were classed as third rate in the human scale that was implemented by the slaveowners; categorized under the whites, then under the African-American males. The African-American women were kept in good standing for the convenience of child bearing. Overburdened with the trials and tribulations of slavery Sojourner Truth was able to prosper with spiritual beliefs. Sojourner Truth's stability was made possible by a strong belief in the Holy Spirit. God was the major source of guidance, and willpower from the commencement of the slave trade until the emancipation of slavery. Slavery was orchestrated on a mass scale and caused the separation of many families in order to ensure that slaves would remain with there respective masters. Subservience to the slaveowners was considered to be sacred. Slaves were mentally programmed to believe there masters were gods. The wives of the slaveowners were seen as goddess's ,with there prime intent on down playing the daily work done by the African-American women. This was evident with Sojourner's first slave mistress, the continuos work routine that was endure by Sojourner, was difficult for males to accomplished. the slaves loyal to there masters. Ignorance of the slaves was a pivotal point in terms of loyalty. Considering slave knowledge was limited, in terms of the genetic appearance, beliefs, and language; slaveowners could use this in a condescending manner to position themselves as gods in the eyes of Sojourner and other slaves. At this time she looked upon her master as a God; and believed that he could see her at all times, even as God himself. 1 Female African-American's were kept from experiencing any form of higher learning, they were confined to common household chores- duties that were befitting of a maid. The majority were sent to perform field duties. The Narrative clearly shows that Sojourner (a.k.a.) Isabella was subjected to this type of work throughout her adult life ,mean while her life began to take shape despite the continuos curtailing of her emotional growth. This is directly related to her mother's early testimony about the highest spirits and the magnitude of his power in relations to suffering and distressing situations. " My children there is a God, who hears and sees you", A God, mau-mau! where does he live? asked the children. "He lives in the sky," she replied, "and when you are beaten ,or cruelly treated, or fall into any trouble, you must ask help of him, and he will always hear and help you." She taught them to keel and say the Lord's prayer. 2 Underclassing exploited the African American women for the most part Sojourner was rated second class by the wife of her slavemaster, the master was very appreciative of the slave that would work for days upon days without sleep. Unlike any other slave Sojourner would work whole heartedly without any form of hesitation. In terms of views of various work loads, and different job types, a local. Although Sojourner was highly noted as a slave she was always sited as something that was irrespectfull of a human. It was a fine triumph for Sojourner and her master, and she became more ambitious than ever to please him; and he stimulated her ambition by his commendation, and by boasting of her to his friends, telling them that "that wench " (pointing to Isabel) is better to me than a man- for she will do a good family's washing in the night, and be ready in the morning to go into the field, where she will do as much at raking and binding as my best hands". 3 Sojourner's work ethics were adopted without the incentive of monetary gain or ownership of land. The Battle of Chapultepec in the Mexican-American War
The Battle of Chapultepec in the Mexican-American War On Sept. 13, 1847, the American army assaulted the Mexican Military Academy, a fortress known as Chapultepec, which guarded the gates to Mexico City. Although the Mexicans inside fought valiantly, they were outgunned and outnumbered and were soon overrun. With Chapultepec under their control, the Americans were able to storm two of the city gates and by nightfall were in tentative control of Mexico City itself. Although the Americans captured Chapultepec, the battle is a source of great pride for Mexicans today, as young cadets fought bravely to defend the fortress. The Mexican-American War Mexico and the United States had gone to war in 1846. Among the causes of this conflict were Mexicos lingering anger over the loss of Texas and the US desire for Mexicos western lands, such as California, Arizona, and New Mexico. The Americans attacked from the north and from the east while sending a smaller army west to secure those territories they wanted. The eastern attack, under General Winfield Scott, landed on the Mexican coast in March of 1847. Scott made his way towards Mexico City, winning battles at Veracruz, Cerro Gordo, and Contreras. After the Battle of Churubusco on August 20, Scott agreed to an armistice which lasted until Sept. 7. The Battle of Molino del Rey After talks stalled and the armistice was broken, Scott decided to hit Mexico City from the west and take the Belà ©n and San Cosme gates into the city. These gates were protected by two strategic points: a fortified old mill named Molino del Rey and the fortress of Chapultepec, which was also Mexicos military academy. On September 8, Scott ordered General William Worth to take the mill. The Battle of Molino del Rey was bloody but short and ended with an American victory. At one point during the battle, after fighting off an American assault, Mexican soldiers crept out of the fortifications to kill American wounded: the Americans would remember this hateful act. Chapultepec Castle Scott now turned his attention to Chapultepec. He had to take the fortress in combat: it stood as a symbol of hope for the people of Mexico City, and Scott knew that his enemy would never negotiate a peace until he had defeated it. The castle itself was an imposing stone fortress set on the top of Chapultepec Hill, some 200 feet above the surrounding area. The fortress was relatively lightly defended: about 1,000 troops under the command of General Nicols Bravo, one of Mexicos better officers. Among the defenders were 200 cadets from the Military Academy who had refused to leave: some of them were as young as 13. Bravo had only about 13 cannons in the fortress, far too few for an effective defense. There was a gentle slope up the hill from Molino del Rey. Assault of Chapultepec The Americans shelled the fortress all day on September 12 with their deadly artillery. At dawn on the 13th, Scott sent two different parties to scale the walls and assault the castle: although resistance was stiff, these men managed to fight their way to the base of the walls of the castle itself. After a tense wait for scaling ladders, the Americans were able to scale the walls and take the fort in hand-to-hand fighting. The Americans, still angry over their murdered companions at Molino del Rey, showed no quarter, killing many wounded and surrendering Mexicans. Nearly everyone in the castle was killed or captured: General Bravo was among those taken prisoner. According to legend, six young cadets refused to surrender or retreat, fighting to the end: they have been immortalized as the Nià ±os Hà ©roes, or Hero Children in Mexico. One of them, Juan Escutia, even wrapped himself in the Mexican flag and leaped to his death from the walls, just so that the Americans would not be able to take it in battle. Although modern historians believe the tale of the Hero Children to be embellished, the fact is that the defenders fought valiantly. Death of the Saint Patricks A few miles away but in full view of Chapultepec, 30 members of the St. Patricks Battalion awaited their grim fate. The Battalion was composed mainly of deserters from the US army who had joined the Mexicans: most of them were Irish Catholics who felt that they should be fighting for Catholic Mexico instead of the USA. The Battalion had been crushed at the Battle of Churubusco on August 20: all of its members were dead, captured or scattered in and around Mexico City. Most of those that had been captured were tried and sentenced to death by hanging. 30 of them had been standing with nooses around their necks for hours. As the American flag was raised over Chapultepec, the men were hanged: it was meant to be the last thing they ever saw. The Gates of Mexico City With the fortress of Chapultepec in their hands, the Americans immediately attacked the city. Mexico City, once built over lakes, was accessed by a series of bridge-like causeways. The Americans assaulted the Belà ©n and San Cosme causeways as Chapultepec fell. Although resistance was fierce, both causeways were in American hands by the late afternoon. The Americans drove the Mexican forces back into the city: by nightfall, the Americans had gained enough ground to be able to bombard the heart of the city with mortar fire. Legacy of the Battle of Chapultepec On the night of the 13th, Mexican General Antonio Là ³pez de Santa Anna, in overall command of the Mexican forces, retreated from Mexico City with all available soldiers, leaving it in American hands. Santa Anna would make his way to Puebla, where he would unsuccessfully try to sever the American supply lines from the coast. Scott had been correct: with Chapultepec fallen and Santa Anna gone, Mexico City was well and truly in the hands of the invaders. Negotiations began between the American diplomat Nicholas Trist and what was left of the Mexican government. In February they agreed on the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war and ceded vast tracts of Mexican land to the USA. By May the treaty had been ratified by both nations and was officially implemented. The Battle of Chapultepec is remembered by the U.S. Marine Corps as one of the first major battles in which the corps saw action. Although the marines had been around for years, Chapultepec was their highest-profile battle to date: the Marines were among those who had successfully stormed the castle. The marines remember the battle in their hymn, which begins with From the halls of Montezumaâ⬠¦ and in the blood stripe, the red stripe on the trousers of the marine dress uniform, which honors those who fell at the Battle of Chapultepec. Although their army was defeated by the Americans, the Battle of Chapultepec is a source of much pride for Mexicans. In particular, the Nià ±os Hà ©roes who bravely refused to surrender, has been honored with a memorial and statues, and many schools, streets, parks, etc. in Mexico are named for them.

Life in the Digital Age Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Life in the Digital Age - Essay Example The development resulted in data transmission methods that had significantly faster speeds than the pre-existent methods of data transmission. In the end, the technology provided a fast and reliable method of communication that served as an alternative to the analogue communication tools of the day. Its pros facilitated its application in most of the communication of the world today. Telecommunications, television broadcasts, digital printing, and other major communication methods rely on digital methods in message transmission. In the last two decades, the development has been fast tracked with new communication methods such as the internet, social media, and online sharing coming into being. These have enabled worldwide connectivity with unrestricted sharing of all kinds of information. This has yielded a lot of benefits that have helped significantly in the covering of major milestones in the goal of global development and security. However, according to Cathy Davidson in Now You See It, the use of digital technology has also resulted in the social phenomenon of the generation having a paradoxical obsession with implications associated with living in the digital age. This raises the question ââ¬Å"do we need to rethink and restructure the organization of our institutions so as to maximize the results because of the situation of the digital era?â⬠Technology availability In the United States, investments into the technology industry has seen the availability of technology increase many folds as the population wants to access information and utility sites like social media. A PISA survey in 2006 showed that among pupils in the 15-year age bracket, over 95% frequently used a computer at home (Gros 26). The projections of this survey show that in 2013 this is a universal feature. The survey found that most of the children prefer the internet to all other media. The universal access has increased the overall time spent on screens with most teenagers spendin g a large portion of their time on social networks and texting using various gadgets. Television and video games are also a huge part of the lives of the young generation of today. This extends to young children under the age of six who are also accustomed to dealing with technologies. This shows that the young generation is accustomed to and views technology as a necessity in their lives. The development and use of the forms of digital technology has therefore succeeded in influencing the society in viewing it as a necessary part of life with some in the young generation relying heavily on it. This means it is necessary to have institutions of learning that consider this aspect of the young generation (Davidson 12). In comparison, the organization of institutions of learning tends to uphold teaching and assessment models that do not serve the new generation of students facing challenges in learning to think critically in the information overload era. In response, Davidson proposes that changes be made to the systems of learning to embrace digital technology in a fluid and participatory manner. One way of achieving this is the use of digital game-based learning technologies. Digital game based learning Digital game based learning (DGBL) is a method of instruction that applies principles of learning or content that is educational in digital technology in the form of video games aiming at engaging the student ("Digital game-based

Employment Law and Policy - Essay Example First, when they went to meet with Ms. Young, they should have waited for the next meeting time as she did not deny addressing their issues. They began their journey to the headquarters. Second, while investigating the matters highlighted by the three nurses, Custer did not observe the similar discontent from the department heads that was portrayed by the three nurses; rather, the department heads supported Ms. Young. Third, the department heads informed about their reservations over the unprofessional conduct and behavior of the three nurses. Fourth, the Ms. Young also complained about the improper and lack of cooperation from the three nurses. Subsequent to that, when Custer asked each person at the meeting for the names of the people he or she thought responsible for the tension at the Heartland facility, a considerable number of counts highlighted the major involvement of the three nurses. More importantly, when in March, the HR Director Custer was announcing his decisions resolv ing the issue; defiance and resistance to change was personally felt by the Director that was largely contributed by the three nurses. In almost every organization, a code of conduct is established and the employees are required to support and follow the requirements of it. Mostly, a number of organizations emphasize its enforcement so that the smooth functioning of the organization must remain active and continue. However, the conduct of the three nurses did not respect the established code of conduct; rather, they went against it. And, the subsequent investigation proved and necessitated the employment termination of the three nurses. Impasses, Strikes, and Dispute Resolution The Mackay doctrine permits employers to hire permanent replacement workers for strikers (Hatton, 2011, p. 97). However, the United States also maintains that its laws guarantee the right of association and the right to strike and that the ââ¬ËMackay doctrineââ¬â¢ must not violate the right to strike (Compa & Diamond, 1996, p.35). The inverse seniority step violates the sanctity of the Section 8(a) (1) of the NLRA. This Section maintains that any attempt by the employers shall be deemed as an unfair labor practice that interfere with, coerce or restrain employees in the exercise of their rights to join or assist labor organizations, or not to assist or join labor organizations. The inverse seniority option offered by the Child Care Services Inc. (CCSI) represents a clear act of interfering in the employee rights to assist or perform labor organization related activities and the inverse seniority would bring the replacements first for the most senior members; and, in the very first attempt of replacement, the main union members of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) would be replaced in the case of strike; this action directly breaches the workersââ¬â¢ rights and puts additional pressure on them so that they should avoid exercising their legal rights for obtaining their objectives. On the other hand, Mackay doctrine permits the employers to hire replacement workers in the

Universal Acceptance of Hamlet by William Shakespeare Essay -- Hamlet
Universal Acceptance of Hamlet by William Shakespeare The tragedy and situation in the play ââ¬ËHamletââ¬â¢ has been commented on as ââ¬Ëuniversal.ââ¬â¢ Audiences of many different cultures can enjoy ââ¬ËHamletââ¬â¢ even though it is set in an alien culture to them. The reasons for this are that many people can relate to the play, they feel that they are living though a profound experience, even if nothing in the plot of Hamlet has ever happened to them. The experience of ââ¬ËHamletââ¬â¢ is not restricted to the plot and its characters. A large factor in this universal acceptance is that the main character, Hamlet, around whom the entire play revolves, is realist and ââ¬Ëuniversalââ¬â¢ himself. In this Hamlet is merely a reflection of aspects found in all men, he is a symbol for how any man would act given the situation. If he reacts the way you would react, that makes him a very easy to relate to and sympathetic character. This does not mean that Hamlet reflects the common man and his action, or Rosencrantz and Guildenstern would be more probable ââ¬Ëuniversal men.ââ¬â¢ Hamlet reflects what the common man wishes and feels he could do if he were given the chance. Hamlet is 'superhuman' in this sense. He is able to find the strength to act though his tragic situation with out giving in to easier ways and temptations along the way. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are more common man than universal, for though they have loyalty to Hamlet as they have been his friends for many years, they still have their own ambition. (Gertrude) ââ¬Å"Your visitation may receive such thanks As fits a kingââ¬â¢s remembranceâ⬠¦ (Rosencrantz) by the sovereign power you have of us,â⬠¦ (Guildenstern) Heaven make our presence and our practices Pleasant and helpful to him! [Hamlet]â⬠(Act1, Scene2) They make a choice, and like Judas, they make the ââ¬Ëwrongââ¬â¢ one. They do not stand strong and faithful to Hamlet, but act on King Claudiusââ¬â¢s behalf, in hope of recognition. This is a ââ¬Ëcommonââ¬â¢ manââ¬â¢ action, to take the favorable route on the behalf of personal interest. Hamletââ¬â¢s main appeal is that he is trapped into a cycle, but he takes the noble and faithful action to affront the situation, leaving no doubt to the audience that he is in the right. Though Hamlet is in a sense 'superhuman,' he is still human and easy to relate to for he does have flaws. He is not the shining hero riding in on a white horse to save the day, he... ...ample Hamlet forgives Laertes, yet kills him. Therefore Hamlet can not give punishment without commit crime. As a result the cycle starts again, against Hamlet this time. The crime is committed, and the ââ¬ËCommits the crime and must suffer for itââ¬â¢ role acts again. Hamlet is forced into the cycle over which he can have no control. In being the punisher Hamlet must also be punished. In this Hamlet may symbolise an aspect that many people feel, that they are locked into cycle that they cannot escape. Hamlet is therefore a symbol of the ââ¬Ëuniversal man.ââ¬â¢ He does not reflect the common manââ¬â¢s actions and deeds, but what the common man could possible do if given the chance. He represents the inner strengths of humanity, the virtues that they are capable of achieving. Yet he still remains truly human, making mistakes and being unable to escape the greater cycles and powers that exist. Hamlet may not reflect every man that exists, he reflects a part within them that exists. Hamlet is not the common man, but this is not due to his sovereignty, education, manners or upbringing. It is due to his ability to access his inner strength and do the right thing, even when the odds are against him.

Hardware and software report Essay
This logo is attractive as it advertises its name in its logo and so it is a useful selling point, this is unlike other logos such as the Apple logo where there is no text. Secondly logo uses two colours and therefore it looks clean and professional and unlike other logos such as the old Fanta logo (which is cluttered and not colour coordinated). Thirdly this logo is a definite improvement for previous BA logos, such as the one released on the Queenââ¬â¢s Birthday in 1991. However the logo hasnââ¬â¢t been updated for just over fifteen years, certainly there have been modifications and improvements, and however BA hasnââ¬â¢t changed it completely. A report done by The Economist shows this could be why BAââ¬â¢s sales have been dropping gradually over the past decade. This logo represents the British based airline; Monarch. This logo uses two complementary colours, which are purple and yellow. The crown image is very clever because it matches the name of airline. The colours are used to great effect on the crown, the middle part of the crown is filled in with a golden yellow, and the two sides match the purple font. The crown is in a bold shape of an ââ¬Å"Mâ⬠so that people will notice that it belongs to Monarch Airways. It is extremely simple but also very clever and unique Ryan Air is an Irish Airline company who specialise in cheap flights. This logo is simple and quite plain and dull. The writing is big and bold so that people can read it from a long distance and so that it stands out and it has a short slogan underneath persuading potential customers to fly with them. It also has a small image of a golden harp but itââ¬â¢s not on the subject of flying, planes, or holidays. The Ryan Air logo is far too plain and doesnââ¬â¢t use the beautiful two colours to effect. 2. 2 My Logos 2. 3 My Final Logo Mr Jones chose this logo, because he believed this logo represents the ethos and nature of the company. This is one of the only logos to have the slogan of the company underneath. He believed that this was an essential marketing point, which reflects the company. After research of existing logos (both travel and non-travel) and their colour scheme, I chose brow, yellow, and black. He chose the computer designed logos because they look more professional and pleasing to the eye. Another factor that was imperative to my chosen design is the survey I carried out (see Appendix C for completed survey). 2. 4 Task Evaluation How did you choose what features to include in your logo? I looked at three different logos and evaluated the good and the bad things about each logo, and then created each of my own logos and trying to include all of the good features that I had spotted, to make it as effective as possible. I also created a survey on what customers wanted to see in a logo which has given me more of an insight into customerââ¬â¢s needs. What hardware and software did you use? To create these particular logos I used: Hardware Dell Dimension DM 051 Software Microsoft Publisher 2007 Microsoft Word 2007 Corel Graphics Designer Internet Explorer 7 (www. logomaker. com) Suggest an alternative way for completing the task and what other hardware or software could you have used? For this task I could have used different programs or I could have edited my drawn designs on the computer Software Microsoft PowerPoint 2003/7 Adobe Photoshop CS2 Hardware Apple Mac (OS 3. 0 Beta) How well did this task work? Overall I think I did quite well on this task, as I managed to use different programs and explore the different features of them, also I looked at the differences in the features between Microsoft Word 2003 and Microsoft 2007, I feel this has benefited me greatly. My logos look professional and smart, and I am pleased and the end result, however I feel I couldââ¬â¢ve put a slogan on all of the logos, not just one.

Similarities Between Jainism And Buddhism - 927 Words
Jainism and Buddhism share some common ground and similarities in their beliefs and practices, and they also have features that make them unique and distinctively different from the other. Some of the central similarities of Jainism and Buddhism can be found in when and where their traditions originated, resemblances in their primary teachers, their religious goals, nonbelief in a creator, and their values of nonattachment and nonviolence. Some differences between Jainism and Buddhism are found in their karmic principles and the conception of the soul. There seems to be more parallels shared between Jainism and Buddhism than discrepancies. Jainismââ¬â¢s and Buddhismââ¬â¢s main teachers of the practices also share some similarities. Although the Jain teachings did not originate with him, Mahavira, known as The Great Hero, was the major teacher of the Jain path. Around the same time in the 5th century BCE, Siddhartha Gautama was teaching another path which would come to be known as Buddhism. These two teachers were each a prince of a Kshatriya clan and both renounced his position of wealth at around the same age: Mahavira was 30, and Siddhartha Gautama was 29. (Fisher, 2013, pp. 121, 137, 138) Both Jainism and Buddhism originated in India. Yet, unlike Hinduism, neither is based on the Vedas, and both were alternatives to the ritual-oriented Brahmanism of India. Psychology â⬠Experiment on Stress Free Essays
Introduction In this experiment we are going to describe stress and prove how can a prolonged exposition to it have a negative impact on memory. The definition of stress used in this experiment is: difficulty one suffers that causes worry, emotional tension or loss of concentration. The reason why this topic has been chosen is because stress is a part of nowadays, hectic society and it has a very noticeable effect on peopleââ¬â¢s performance, in either work or daily life. We will write a custom essay sample on Psychology ââ¬â Experiment on Stress or any similar topic only for you Order Now The outcome of this experiment could be used in several fields, such as education; to help reduce the amount of stress students deal with, so their grades could be improved. The results could also be used to enhance and boost employerââ¬â¢s efficiency, in the workplace field. The hypothesis is to test how short-term stressful situations can lead to memory dysfunction. The null hypothesis, on the other hand, is that stress has no impact on memory whatsoever. The aim of this experiment is to prove how stress produces memory issues. II. Design The most efficient and easiest way to carry out this experiment would be using repeated measures, using the same sample of participants in both sets of conditions, deceiving participants to avoid any internal validity issue. Allowing a long time gap between conditions or changing the mentioned conditions would avoid participants from finding out the aim of the experiment, or biasing it. Single blind is the best method that can be used in this experiment, opposed to double-blind, which would be meaningless, because if participants are told the aim they might do better than they would do in a normal life situation, and the study would lose itââ¬â¢s reliability. Since itââ¬â¢s a short-term based experiment and the same sample of participants is used for both conditions, the experimental group would perform a series of memory-challenging activities, and later on, the control group would perform the same tasks but under the influence of some source of stress, in this case, loud music. There are no ethical concerns involved because no participant would leave with any kind of stress or anger, and they wouldnââ¬â¢t be exposed to loud music for a long time. They would also be debriefed at the end of the study. The Independent Variable (IV) is the amount of stress received by any mean, and the Dependent Variable (DV) is memory performance. Other variables that shall be identified, since they are thought to have an impact on the results are the following: previous level of stress of participants, temperature of the room where the experiment is being held, roomââ¬â¢ walls color, participantââ¬â¢s previous fatigue or mood, amongst others, which could be easily avoided by performing yoga classes and controlling the room were the experiment is being carried out. III. Participants Since the target population is people living in Spain from the age of 16 to people aged 66, both male and female, it includes a very large number of people in which the outcomes of this study are going to be focused on, and therefore, a huge target population to choose from in order to get participants for the study. Therefore, the best sampling technique that could be used would be quota sampling, as it allows the researcher to split the target population up into various sub-groups, which in this case would solely be age and gender, because no other variables can affect/bias the outcomes of this experiment. Then, from this preset sub-groups, the researcher would deliberately pick out how many people is needed and what characteristics this people must have. There would be 5 sub-groups based on age and gender (each group ranging 10 years), each group adding up the total number of 25 people (5 per group ). Participants would be asked for consent after using them as the sample. IV. Materials Materials needed for this experiment are basically those involving any lab-related experiment. The primary materials would be a laboratory room or a classroom, equipped with tables, desks and chairs, as well as a board. Another room would be needed in order to perform the relax therapy sessions that would be useful for the experiment, so all types of equipment related to yoga is needed, such as mats, light weights, etc. The other type of material that is used is questionnaires on stress participants may have before performing any activity, a list of words for participants to memorize, and a set of speakers, which will be the actual source of stress. V. Procedures * Gather participants in a room and have them do a stress questionnaire to see what is their current level of stress. * With the results of such questionnaires split participants up into two groups, one including the more stressed people, and the other group the remaining people, participants should remain deceived until the end of the experiment. * Have participants from both groups take yoga classes (or any similar activity with the same purpose) so their level of stress is reduced and partially equal to one another. These sessions should not last for longer than 30 minutes. * This being done, have a brief group interview with them to see whether the relaxing activity was helpful and useful, if so, carry on to next step; if not, record the participants name in order to use this variables as a benefit when evaluating the results. * Make participants memorize a list of 10 words without any external stimuli such as noise or visual distraction, being given no longer than 10 minutes. Evaluate the capacity of the participants to memorize such words by giving them a test where they have to write down the maximum number of words they can remember. * Afterwards, make participants wait for 15 minutes in a room with a source of stress, in this case, noise coming from speakers, similar to the one produced by whistles. Then, give each participant the second condition, another list of 10 words with similar spelling and same grammar category, but still applying the source of stress. However, participants are not going to be told that researchers are empowering this source of stress. They are given 10 minutes. * Have them write out a ââ¬Ëquizââ¬â¢ testing them on how many words they were able to memorize in this environment. * If any participant was showing any symptom of being stressed or not feeling good, make the participant take some yoga classes so they leave the experiment without any stress; debrief participants so that the experiment meets all ethical requirements. VI. Analysis The obtained data is quantitative because it is taken from the memory tests performed throughout the experiment, and a good way in which it could be presented visually and effectively would be by using bar graphs, such as the following, filled in with the recorded data. This graph lets us see the relationship between participants in both conditions, and easily compare performances. If participants were interviewed after performing the tests, we would also have qualitative data that would make our results more reliable. An area that could be researched on after performing this experiment could be how a prolonged exposition to stress could affect memory, as a way of looking into possible starters of psychological illnesses such as Alzheimer, etc. The outcomes of this experiment could be applied in a variety of real life situations because stress is at an increasing rate in our modern societies, and studying how it might affect peopleââ¬â¢s life is necessary. With such results, we could discuss how stress may slowly be deteriorating an individualââ¬â¢s cognitive capacities, such as memory, or completely disprove our initial hypothesis. The experiment was carried out with the most possible accuracy and passivity from the researcher in order to avoid any form of researcher bias. Participants were not told the aim of the study or the hypothesis; they were deceived to exclude participantââ¬â¢s bias, such as demand characteristics or the ââ¬Ëscrew-you effectââ¬â¢. However, a potential problem that could suppose using the same sample of participants for both conditions is that the aim of the experiment could be found out and therefore, participants could somehow bias the study. Even though researchers tried to take all possible variables into account to reduce the possible effects on the results, some couldnââ¬â¢t be controlled, like the mood of participants or their previous exposition to stress throughout their lives, an important factor that can bias the study. On top of that, thereââ¬â¢s a lack of ecological validity because the study was performed in a lab and not in the participantââ¬â¢s natural environment where they are used to, so they might not act normally in a lab environment. Video Games Why The Gender Bias Essay Example For Students
Video Games: Why The Gender Bias? Essay This Christmas, like millions of other parents, I bought my two children, a boy and a girl,a popular home video game system. I thought they could share it and when asked if this was OKwith them, they replied, Sure mom, that would be great. So, we planned on installing the littlegoody onto the TV in the family room, so that both kids would have an equal chance to play. So,What then? you may be asking is the problem. The problem arose when we went to shop forgames for the system. They werent hard to find. They were in all the local toy stores andWalmart and Kmart too! But, there werent any for girls! I looked high and low and came upempty handed. Why was this happening? Surely, girls must want to play video games as much as boysdo! Why then, arent game manufacturers producing any video games that feature girls as themain character? On a recent trip to our local Walmart store, I found over two hundred videogame titles, yes I counted, for our game system, but of these only two had female maincharacters. One of them was, you guessed it, Barbie! The other one was a female warriordressed in a scantily clad leather outfit. Im pretty sure the latter was designed for young men,and not for young girls. Surely, a big retailer, like Toys-R-Us would have more of a selection. So, off I went onmy merry way only to be once again disappointed. Toys-R-Us had over 300 titles in stock forour game system and only the same two titles I found at Walmart were available there with onenew addition, which was the Spice Girls CD. Its price had been reduced, so I guessed it was leftover from last year when the Spice Girls used to be popular. I ended up purchasing 4 games for my kids to play. I found a few with cartoon charactersas lead characters, that I felt would be appropriate for kids. I bought Rugrats, Loony Tunes,Grand Turismo (race cars), and Tetras (puzzle). All, except the puzzle game, had malecharacters in the lead, but at least these were rated as non-violent. After some careful research, I found that video games are a 7 billion dollar a yearindustry that out surpasses even the movie industry by 2 billion dollars each year ( 2 ). Mostly, these games are being sold to boys and young men. Girls currently represent only about 20percent of the market, having been pretty much written off by important manufacturers like,Hasbro, Sony, and Sega ( 3 ). Girls have extensive buying power though, nearly 84 billion dollars annually, and over 6million of them live in households with gaming systems ( 3 ). From ages, 6 to 10, girls playvideo games as much and as often as boys in that same age bracket, and one survey reports thatif there were more games out there that they enjoyed, 85 percent of girls surveyed would usetheir gaming systems more ( 1 ). Girls dont seem to like the same kinds of games boys do. Instead of the violent, time-limited games boys go for, the girls like games that offer strongnarratives, interaction, and creativity. Its not enough to simply convert or replace existingsoftware for girls; the basic structure should be changed. A 1995 survey in Childrens SoftwareReview found only 28 of the 344 games with female characters in leading roles ( 3 ), proof thatfew producers have created games exclusively for girls. I believe this is largely so, due to the male dominance in the whole computer andtechnological industry. Males are turning out a product for other males. Then why arent womenout there designing a product girls will enjoy? Some are trying, but I have found it a catch-22situation. Men are leading the technology industry because they are the ones inviting othermales to join their ranks by making only games geared towards boys and young men. Girls areless likely to deem this area as fun and inviting and thus, turn their attention to other areas ofstudy once college bound. .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d , .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d .postImageUrl , .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d , .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d:hover , .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d:visited , .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d:active { border:0!important; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d:active , .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2c33aa3a72e523302ed7246987496b6d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Atomic Bomb EssaySome companies are beginning to look for ways to encourage girls to get more involvedin information technology. Girl Tech is one such group, in hopes of reaching 3.4 million GirlScouts, they are sponsoring a technology merit-badge program (3 ). Efforts like this mustcontinue, though more immediate measures need to be taken in order for girls to becometechnologically proficient. If for no other reason than for an increase in earning potential, girlsmust learn to use and keep up with the technology around them. Not developing video games for girls, seems to be a classic example of symbolicannihilation ( 4 ). That is, the media has traditionally ignored women. In this case, even thoughgirls have money to spend, their needs still arent being met. With the amount of time childrenspend playing video games each week, one study says as much as 4 hours by boys and at least 2hours by girls, what kind of message are we giving our kids ( 2 )? I know it cant be positive. I really hadnt realized the bias towards girls in the toy department. This has reallyopened my eyes as a consumer! I am interested on my next trip to the toy store , to find out ifother areas of the store are as biased as the video game department. Its already evident thatthere is a division of boy isles and girl isles. My children have pointed this out many of timewith cries of, I want to go to the girl isle! from my daughter and the opposite from my son. What is important here is that, I am at least aware of the problem now. I wonder how manyother mothers with daughters are aware of what is available to their daughters as consumers. Itreally is disturbing when you think about it.

Paths of Glory an Example by
Paths of Glory The irony behind Lt. Rogets choosing of Cpl. Paris to be charged with cowardice in the face of the enemy, is that based on the conflict between these two characters, it would show that Lt. Roget is the one who had always displayed cowardice in dangerous times. In the scene where their group infiltrated enemy lines, Lt. Roget, in his seeming panic, had hurled the grenade virtually at an empty target, resulting in the death of their comrade. Need essay sample on "Paths of Glory" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed It was ironic for General Broulard to seek punishment for General Mireau for ordering his men to fire at his own troops because he himself, in a figurative way, has been practicing the same principles. The only difference is that Gen. Broulard does this in a manipulative manner to further enhance his Military career, as was evidenced in the scene where he had offered Gen. Mireaus position to Colonel Dax. Private Arnauds death was especially ironic because, as he had stated while in a conversation in the barracks, Im not afraid of dying tomorrow, only of getting killed (Kubrick, S.). It was also ironic to note that at the time of this statement, he had no inkling that it was to be the very army that he had served who would eventually kill him. Other ironies employed by the director include the serving of a sumptuous last meal to the would-be executed. It was ironic that the food was from Gen. Mireau himself, who had masterminded the mock trial. Another is the attempt to bring Pvt. Arnaud to full health due to his fractured skull, only to be executed by firing squad in the next morning. Yet another enjoyable irony in the film is when Colonel Dax forced the coward Lt. Roget in heading the execution of Cpl. Paris, whom he had despised even before the war, and whom he is obviously petrified with. Perhaps Director Kubrick had employed ironies on a war movie to lessen the impact of brutality, and add humor to the film-an unusual yet effective and clever way of presenting a war movie. This deliberate attempt was also emphasized by not showing the enemy forces in the entire of the film, and the appearance of the only Germana nervous lady singer. Reference Harris, J. Little Red Riding transl. span essays
Little Red Riding transl. span essays A little girl lived with her mother in a small house near a great forest. The girl had neither father nor grandparents. She had a grandmother who was a widow also. Her grandmother lived in a small house on the other side of the forest. As the girl had the custom to use a red pointed hood, everybody called Little Red Riding Hood. - Daughter, your grandmother is ill. You want to take a candy basket to her? - Yes, of course, Mommy- responded Little Red Riding Hood, like she was a very amiable and likeable girl. - Good, here is the basket full of candy said the mother.- As you know, in order to arrive at the house of your grandma, you must cross the forest. In the forest there are wolves. Do not delay, and if a wolf approaches you, call to one of the numerous woodcutters who work in the forest. - I will travel with care, Mommy. I will arrive safely at grandmas house responded Little Red Riding Hood. Then the girl put the candy basket in an arm and soon she had entered the forest. Neglecting the wise advice of her mother of not delaying in the forest, Little Riding Hood was taking flowers and putting them in the basket. Suddenly a great wolf appeared, ferocious, and hungry. The favorite food of this wolf was the meat of little girls, but as it was scared of the woodcutters who worked near there, it resolved to obtain its favorite food with ma - Good morning, Little Riding Hood. Where are you going with that basket full of candies and flowers? Although the girl, since we have seen, was amiable and likeable, she had the great defect of being something disobedient and stupid. She had already disobeyed her mother when delaying in the forest to take flowers. And now she demonstrated her stupidity in answering the wolf instead of calling to the woodcutters. She said: ...
